KANIKAPILA

Dear family and friends,

The school year is fast coming to an end. I can hardly believe that Kanikapila is only a month away. I would like to invite you to be part of a tradition of excellent music and dance as only Ohana O Mele can present. “Kanikapila XI: For Our Keiki” takes place on Saturday, May 17, 2008, at 6:15 p.m. in the Kaimuki High School Auditorium. Our featured guests are Terrance Tom, Holly Soria and Pauline Taumalolo. The lighting is designed by alumni Steven Chung and D’Arcy Kuba. Our sound technician is Alton Waiamau.

Terrance Tom is a talented musician. He is an accomplished pianist, drummer and composer. The fact the Terrance is also blind makes his accomplishments all the more incredible. A lawyer and former State Legislator, Mr. Tom is a children’s advocate and has devoted his cd, “Children Like Me” to that cause. Terrance is the husband of our principal, Penelope Tom.

Holly Soria is Kaimuki High School’s Student Activities Coordinator. After teaching Spanish for more than ten years, she accepted her current position this past October. Holly has been dancing the hula for most of her life and has received rigorous training in this art. An avid horse-woman, Holly has participated often in the annual Aloha Week Floral Parade. We are honored that Mrs. Soria has once again agreed to grace our stage with her dance.

Pauline Taumalolo graduated from Kaimuki High School in 2005 and was a featured vocalist with Ohana O Mele. She has been studying classical voice with Marilyn Liu and is considered one of the most promising vocalists in this genre today. Pauline has won many awards and is planning to study in Europe this summer.

Ohana O Mele is dedicating this show to the youngsters in our audience. We will be singing many songs that pre-schoolers will enjoy along with the young at heart. We will also feature music and dance from many of our Pacific Island neighbors, including Hawai’i, Tahiti, New Zealand, Tonga, Samoa and Chuuk. You won’t want to miss our contemporary part of the program when we will spotlight many of our senior soloists.

We are excited and hope to see you again. Please e-mail me or call 733-4900 ext. 350 to reserve two complimentary tickets. More tickets are available from Ohana O Mele members for $5 adults, $3 students and children under 5 are free.

Mahalo a nui loa,
Darryl
