KAIMUKI HIGH SCHOOL FOUNDATION MEETING Kaimuki High School Library September 16, 2003
Meeting was called to order by Vice President Mike Takamoto 6:25 p.m.
Present: Marian Chun Gary Skinner Gary Zukeran Jan Heiser Mike Takamoto Dennis Manalili Reggie Minn Wayne Tanna David Omoto Anne Torige Cameron Pila Dale Yashiki
1. MEETING MINUTES: The minutes of the July 8, 2003 meeting was reviewed. Correction to the minutes: Fundraiser is to be held on January 10th, not January 11th. It was moved and seconded that the minutes of the meeting of July 8, 2003 be approved as corrected. Motion carried unanimously.
2. COMMITTEE REPORTS: PUBLICITY/PUBLIC AWARNESS COMMITTEE: Jan reported that the committee is working on securing price quotes for banners to be put up in front of the campus to advertise the upcoming fundraising event. The Foundation flyer has been submitted to Jim Takamoto for final printing. Additional advertising ideas that were discussed were as follows:
- Foodland allows advertisement of community events. Jan knows the Market City Manager and will follow up on the idea. - November 1, 2003 canvassing of the Kapahulu and Kaimuki business to ask for their support/donations. It was further suggested that Steve script the canvassing effort. - November 15th Craft Fair – we can pass out flyers advertising the upcoming fundraiser.
3. OLD BUSINESS: A. NEXT FUNDRAISING PROJECT The next fundraising project date will be January 10, 2004. Mel Cabang has confirmed his participation. Anne has volunteered her daughter and partner to play the flute and harp for ½ hour during dinner. All agreed that that would be very appropriate dinner music.
It was also agreed that we would target the end of October to mail letters of solicitation. Dale will work on drafting a letter to be sent to businesses soliciting donations.
B. General Excise Tax – Treasurer Wayne Tanna contributed the excise tax which the Foundation owed for income it received during the first half of 2003, which amounted to $94.20.
C. Future fundraising ideas - Principal Manalili reported that the potential fundraising projects which he spoke with Representative Calvin Say about may be cost prohibitive for the Foundation to get involved. There may be a Taste of Kaimuki to be held in March at Kapiolani Community College, and maybe a concer in the Fall of 2004.
It was also suggested that the Foundation consider putting on a carnival, but it was decided that concerns over liability and the cost of putting something like that on are too great.
D. Future projects – It was again suggested that the Foundation consider assisting with the beautification of the front area of the school. Principal Manalili reported that the school is looking into giving away some of the trees to open up the front area of the school.
4. NEW BUSINESS A. Vice Principal Gary Zukeran (’64) requested that the Foundation consider providing another golf cart to the school to be used by security to patrol the school grounds, and to transport students for emergency purposes. Jay Hinazumi of Golf Concepts (also an alumnus) is prepared to sell a used, later model cart to the school for $1,000.00 which includes servicing. Gary explained that there are 4 security guards to cover the campus. The Board will discuss the proposal at a later date.
B. A suggestion was made to the Board to consider an alarm for the Computer lab. Principal Manalili informed the Board that the school would take care of this cost item.
C. Another suggestion was made to assist the yearbook teacher by purchasing digital equipment. Principal Manalili stated that the school should handle this expense as well.
5. NEXT MEETING The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 21 or 28 (depending on whether the letters of solicitation for the next fundraiser will be available), at 6:00 p.m.
Meeting was adjourned at 7:30 p.m.
RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED:
Dale Yashiki, Secretary
